Eye Test! Can you spot which of these boards is veneered?

The answer is: they are *all* veneered.
After reading this, you’ll be able to identify 80% of veneered wood products.
1. Check the side seams/grain continuity (The most accurate method!)
- Veneered Board: The grain on the side edges features finger-jointed seams, while the surface displays a continuous, straight grain; the grain patterns on the top and sides do not align at all (Figures 1 & 2 show typical characteristics).
- Solid Wood: The grain on the side edges flows naturally into the surface grain, with no abrupt breaks or jarring seams.
2. Examine the surface grain patterns
- Veneered: The grain patterns are repetitive, rigid, and uniform in thickness—resembling a printed design (Figure 3 shows an identical pattern repeating itself).
Natural wood cannot possibly have patterns that repeat exactly.
- Solid Wood: The grain features variations in depth and shade, natural knots, and varying thicknesses; each piece is unique.
3. Inspect the chamfers/edge details
- Veneered: The edges are prone to revealing the underlying substrate or peeling; the grain pattern abruptly cuts off where it meets the chamfer (Note the obvious seam on the side edge in Figure 1).
- Solid Wood: The grain transitions naturally across the chamfer with no breaks or discontinuities, offering a warm, tactile quality.
4. Feel the texture + Observe the sheen
- Veneered: The surface feels overly smooth and artificial; the sheen is uniform and lifeless.
- Solid Wood: Possesses the distinct tactile feel of natural wood grain; the sheen varies in intensity according to the depth of the grain, creating a richer, more layered appearance.
