Continued from Previous Post | Common Board Materials: How to Make the Right Choice?

So, when it comes to building cabinetry, how exactly should you choose the right board material? Compared to the dizzying array of options available back home, the selection here in Australia is notably "simpler." Cabinetry materials primarily fall into just three categories:
👉 Particle Board
👉 MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard)
👉 Plywood

1️⃣ Particle Board
This is the most common and widely used material; the majority of pre-assembled cabinetry found at retailers like IKEA and Bunnings is made from it.
Summary: If budget is your top priority and the cabinetry is for everyday use, you can’t go wrong with this—it’s a safe bet.

2️⃣ MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard)
A material with a finer texture than particle board. Its surface is exceptionally smooth, making it excellent for creating intricate shapes and profiles.
Summary: Ideal for crafting decorative cabinet doors and drawer fronts, but less suitable for constructing the cabinet carcasses (boxes) themselves.
Recommended Solution: Use Particle Board or Plywood for the cabinet carcasses, paired with MDF for the doors and drawer fronts.

3️⃣ Plywood
Many people perceive this as a more "premium" option. It is more durable, offers superior structural strength, and provides better resistance to moisture—though it does come with a higher price tag.
Summary: If your budget allows, you desire greater durability, and you have specific requirements for moisture resistance, this is an excellent choice.
