Material Selection | Learn to Distinguish Between "Solid Wood" and "Wood Veneer" in One Article

Rejecting Misleading Tactics: Distinguishing Between "Solid Wood" and "Wood Veneer":

Pure Solid Wood Furniture: All parts of the furniture are made from sawn timber of the same type of wood.

Features: Mortise and tenon structure, highly environmentally friendly, develops a beautiful patina with use, can be repeatedly sanded and refurbished.

Wood Veneer: Engineered wood + ultra-thin wood veneer (0.2-0.5mm).

Features: Less prone to cracking, but susceptible to water and heat damage; the veneer will bubble and peel off after soaking in water; prone to delamination under high temperatures such as underfloor heating; difficult to refurbish after wear exposes the underlying wood.

Wood veneer is cheaper; ask about this when buying furniture to avoid paying the price of pure solid wood for veneer furniture.

Veneer furniture costs 1/3 to 1/2 the price of solid wood.
Three ways to distinguish between "solid wood" and "wood veneer":

1. 1. Examine the grain and cross-section (check for continuous grain and seams at the edges):

Solid wood: The grain on both sides of the same plank is continuous and corresponds, while the sides show the cross-sectional wood grain (growth rings). Complete, continuous wood cross-sections with the same grain can be seen at the edges and corners.

Veneer: The grain on both sides is completely identical (like a copy and paste). There is no cross-sectional grain on the sides, only neat seams. At the edges, especially sharp corners, you can see layered veneer seams like the side of a book page.

2. Feel the texture (whether it feels smooth like paper):

Solid wood: You can feel the natural fine pores and grain of the wood on the surface.

Veneer: The surface is very smooth and flat, feeling like a plastic film.

3. Listen to the sound and weigh it (whether the sound is crisp):

Solid wood: The sound when tapped is deep and crisp; usually heavier.

Veneer: The sound when tapped is dull and diffuse; relatively light (the interior is engineered wood).

What does FAS grade wood mean when the seller mentions it?

Wood Grade: FAS grade, commonly heard of, is a grading standard established by the North American Hardwood Association (NHLA) for "First and Selected," meaning "preferred," specifically referring to high-quality wood that provides a longer, clear facet.

FAS grade wood has strict dimensional requirements: the board width must be 6 inches (approximately 15 cm) or more, and the length must be 8 feet (approximately 2.44 meters) or more. The clear facet (usable portion) must be greater than or equal to 83.3%, ensuring high wood utilization.

FAS grade wood is almost free of bird-pecked grain, knots, longitudinal cracks, splits, slat discoloration, wormholes, and other defects. Its clear, smooth grain and excellent visual effect make it suitable for high-end furniture and interior decoration.

To choose good furniture materials, distinguish between solid wood and wood veneer. You can also consult the seller about whether the wood has FAS certification to ensure you choose high-quality materials at a reasonable price.
