Wood Veneer Knowledge: 4 Commonly Used Slicing Methods!

Ⓐ Solid wood veneer is a commonly used veneer in furniture manufacturing and decoration industries. It features natural and beautiful textures, is healthy and environmentally friendly, and odorless! Wood veneer is mainly obtained by rotary cutting logs. Due to the different characteristics of different tree species, the rotary cutting methods vary slightly. Let's look at four commonly used slicing methods!

➊ Circular Rotary Cutting

Ⓐ In rotary cutting, a whole log is placed into a mold on a lathe and rotated according to the rotation of the blade. If the log does not roll, the rotary cutting or peeling of a single log can be carried out continuously.

Ⓐ The veneer produced by this method exhibits various textures based on the wood's growth rings and different layers of fibers. The width of the rotary-cut veneer is very large, enough to process a whole sheet of veneer. However, because of the discontinuity of the grain, this cutting method produces some asymmetrical textures, so it is mostly used for rotary cutting rare varieties, such as sapele.

➋ Semi-circular Cutting

Ⓐ For logs that are not rotary-cut veneers, they are cut in half, three-quarters, four-quarters, or more. We fix it to the lathe and then rotate it, increasing the width of the veneer when processing by radius.

Ⓐ The semi-circular cutting method was previously thought to accelerate the production of veneers with different grains within a particular tree species.

Ⓐ This cutting method has also historically produced some flat-cut veneer grain patterns.

➌ Flat Cutting

Ⓐ The most common method for processing high-grade veneers, cutting them in half, three-quarters, or even four-quarters. Typically, the backing board is vacuum-held on the lathe, with the heartwood away from the cutting edge. This method can cut veneers of uniform length.

Ⓐ The flat cutting method produces veneers with continuous grain, mainly used for rotary-cut species such as ash and oak.

Ⓐ Veneers produced by this method are very suitable for the production of wall panels, door panels, and furniture because their grain can be continuously spliced.

➍ Quarter-cut veneer

Ⓐ This is a cutting method to obtain straight-grained veneer, avoiding the tiger-stripe pattern that can occur in some tree species. Quarter-cut veneer is performed by fixing the log behind a lathe and rotating it.

Ⓐ The angle of the wood on the cutting bed is fixed during quarter-cutting. As the lathe rotates, the blades cut the straight-grained veneer at a specific angle. The resulting veneer has no other irregular grain patterns, good straight-grain continuity, and is easy to splice.

▲ Regardless of how the solid wood veneer is cut, it's important to choose reputable brands for the boards. For example, Weiye boards are Chinese Environmental Label products, have won the Guangdong Provincial Quality Award, and are included in the Guangdong Key Trademark Protection List. As a board brand with 29 years of history, they offer a complete range of products in various colors and patterns, and their environmental protection level reaches ENF standard, ensuring safe use.
