Red Oak & White Oak

The biggest difference between white oak and red oak: the vessels in the cross-section and the medullary rays in the tangential section.
Both are noble North American hardwoods, red oak and white oak possess completely different souls… Both belong to the genus *Quercus* of the family Fagaceae, but they belong to different subgenera—like cousins, similar in genes but vastly different in abilities.
【Similarities】
1. King of Hardness: Red oak (Janka 1290) and white oak (Janka 1360) both exceed 1000 hardness, crushing ordinary woods with their load-bearing and compressive strength. Flooring made from these woods retains its sharp edges even after ten years.
2. Beauty of Grain: Straight grain and mountain-shaped grain create a natural canvas, easily adaptable to styles ranging from Neo-Chinese to Scandinavian, with the natural wood texture never fading.
【Differences】
1. Melts: White oak: Melts exceed 2cm, flowing silver like a galaxy after cutting. Red Oak: Rays are only about 1cm long, with a bold and unrestrained grain, and a warm brown base color like the pulse of the earth.
2. Water Resistance (Pores)
White Oak: Pores contain natural silica gel (tyloses), making it the first choice for humid coastal areas, and also a material for making wine barrels.
Red Oak: Pores are open and unfilled, with a high water absorption rate. Use with caution in humid southern regions, as it is prone to cracking and mold.
[Tears turning to laughter] (I just blew air into the pores of red oak and it really worked! So the finishing process is especially important; I'll share more about that later.)
For finished furniture of the same volume and quality, white oak is 30%-50% more expensive than red oak.
White oak is valued for its naturally gifted anti-corrosion genes and beautiful silver spots, while red oak is valued for its more affordable price due to mass production. If you're looking for heirloom quality and a sophisticated style, white oak's premium is reasonable; if you're practical and value cost-effective, red oak remains a good choice among hardwoods.
