Solid wood board selection strategy | A must-read for novices

Today, let me share with you how to choose solid wood boards?
1. Understand the types of solid wood boards
Common solid wood boards include oak, walnut, cherry, maple, ash, etc. Different woods have different characteristics and appearances.
Oak: divided into red oak and white oak. Red oak has a rough texture and a hard texture; white oak is lighter in color and has good corrosion resistance.
Walnut: The color is deep, dark brown with purple, the texture is beautiful and shiny, and the texture is very good.
Cherry: The color changes from light red to dark red, the texture is fine, and the gloss is good after polishing.
Maple: The color is lighter, usually milky white to light reddish brown, the hardness is moderate, the wood texture is dense, and there are unique bird's eye or tiger back patterns.
Ash: The color is light, close to white, has a strong decay resistance, is easy to process, and the wood grain is clear and beautiful.
2. Key points for judging the quality of solid wood boards
1. Look at the texture
The texture of pure solid wood boards is natural, smooth and irregular. If the texture is too neat and regular, it is likely to be an artificial board.
2. Smell the odor
The preferred solid wood boards only have a faint fragrance of the wood itself. If there is a pungent and unpleasant smell, it may be that the board has been too chemically treated. This type of board should be selected with caution.
3. Observe the dryness of the board
Solid wood boards with good dryness are not easy to deform or crack. You can judge by knocking on the board and listening to the sound. The crisp sound is usually better dry; the dull sound may have a higher water content.
3. Reference price and hardness ranking💲
1. Material price ranking (roughly)
Teak>Black walnut>Hard maple>Cherry>White oak>Ash>Red oak>Manchurian ash>Beech>Boxwood>Rubberwood>Pine
2. Wood hardness ranking (roughly)
Hard maple>White oak>Ash>Beech>Red oak>Teak>Black walnut>Cherry>Boxwood>Pine
4. Understand wood grade
FAS grade>FAS single face>Selected grade>General grade 1>General grade 2
It should be noted that the SUP grade is a standard set by some factories, claiming to be better than the FAS grade, but it has not been officially recognized. Be careful when choosing.
I hope this guide to selecting solid wood boards will be helpful to everyone. I wish everyone can choose the solid wood boards they like and create a beautiful home~
