Learn about a Chinese herbal medicine every day: Birch Bark

【Introduction】Birch bark is a general term for the bark of trees such as birch, black birch, and mountain birch, belonging to the genus *Birch* of the family Betulaceae. Birch trees are tall and straight, with bark that is white, grayish-white, or dark black, with a smooth surface that peels off in layers or flakes—a distinctive characteristic of birch bark. Birch bark not only has many uses in traditional life but also possesses certain medicinal value, making it a commonly used folk remedy.

【Harvesting Time】Birch bark is generally harvested in spring and autumn. In spring, the sap begins to flow, making it easier for the bark to separate from the xylem; in autumn, the trees grow slowly, so harvesting at this time has relatively less impact on the trees.

【Other Names】White birch bark, powdery birch bark, smooth birch bark, etc.

【Properties and Channels Entered】Birch bark is bitter and cold in nature, and enters the lung and large intestine channels.

[Distribution Area] In my country, birch is widely distributed in the high-altitude areas of Northeast, North, Northwest, and Southwest China, such as the forest areas of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Sichuan, and Yunnan, often forming large pure stands or mixed with other coniferous and broad-leaved trees.

[Medicinal Part] The main medicinal part is the bark of the birch tree. Birch bark appears as rolled or sheet-like pieces, 2-3 mm thick. The outer surface is grayish-white or yellowish-white, with fine transverse wrinkles and numerous round or elongated lenticels; the inner surface is yellowish-white and smooth. It is flexible and not easily broken, with a fibrous fracture surface. It has a faint odor and a bland taste.

[Efficacy and Uses] Birch bark contains various chemical components such as betulin, betulinic acid, flavonoids, and terpenes, and has the effects of clearing heat and dampness, relieving cough and asthma, and detoxifying and reducing swelling. Traditionally, it is used to treat dysentery, diarrhea, cough and asthma, carbuncles, and boils. 【Contraindications】 Not for use by pregnant women. Birch bark is cold in nature and may have adverse effects on the fetus.

Use with caution by those with weak spleen and stomach, as it may aggravate symptoms, leading to abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc.

Use with caution by those with allergies. A skin allergy test should be performed before use. If redness, swelling, itching, or other allergic reactions occur, discontinue use immediately.

Do not use excessive amounts of birch bark. Excessive use may cause adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

【Characteristics】 In appearance, birch bark is mostly irregularly curled or flat, varying in size. The surface color varies depending on the tree species and growing environment, generally white, grayish-white, or dark black, with a unique texture and luster. It is flexible and tough, not easily torn. It has a faint odor and a mild taste, with a slightly bitter taste when chewed.
