"Figured wood" isn't a specific tree species; the term describes wood fibers that don't grow straight but twist and intertwine. When light hits it, it creates alternating light and dark areas—shifting as your eyes move. It resembles ripples on water, hence the name "shadow" (Ying).

In the context of antique *hongmu* (redwood), "figured wood" often referred to *yingmu* (burl wood/tree knots). However, the "figured wood" discussed today refers to this specific shifting light-and-shadow grain. They are not the same thing, though the terms are often confused.

The same board looks different depending on the viewing angle.
