Continued from the previous post | Differences between common board materials—how do you choose?

So, how exactly should you choose board materials when having cabinets made? Compared to the vast array of options available in China, the selection in Australia is significantly "simpler." There are primarily three types of boards used for cabinetry:
👉 Particle Board
👉 MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard)
👉 Plywood

1️⃣ Particle Board
The most common and widely used material; most ready-made cabinets from places like IKEA or Bunnings are constructed from this.
Verdict: If you’re budget-conscious and need something for everyday use, this is a safe, no-brainer choice.

2️⃣ MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard)
A material with a finer, more uniform texture than particle board. Its surface is exceptionally smooth, making it ideal for creating decorative profiles or shapes.
Verdict: Best suited for cabinet doors with detailed profiles, rather than the cabinet carcasses (frames) themselves.
Recommended approach: Use Particle Board or Plywood for the cabinet carcasses, and MDF for the doors.

3️⃣ Plywood
Often perceived as a more "premium" option, it is highly durable, strong, and offers superior moisture resistance—though it comes at a higher price point.
Verdict: A great choice if your budget allows and you prioritize long-term durability or enhanced moisture resistance.
