Observing Furniture: How to Distinguish Between Solid Wood, Wood Veneer, and Engineered Wood

Even when furniture features a wood-grain pattern, the surface material may differ from the material underneath. To understand wooden furniture, it is essential to distinguish between these three concepts:
① Solid Wood: Refers to the core material. It retains the natural structure of wood and can consist of either a single, solid piece or multiple pieces joined together.
② Wood Veneer: Refers to the surface finish. A thin layer of wood is applied over a substrate to create a wood-grain appearance. The underlying substrate can be either solid wood or engineered wood.
③ Engineered Wood: Refers to the composition. Common types include plywood (multi-layered boards), particleboard, and fiberboard (MDF/HDF), which are manufactured from wood veneers, wood particles, or wood fibers, respectively.
Keep in mind: "Wood veneer" describes the surface layer, while "solid wood" and "engineered wood" refer to the internal material. You cannot determine the materials used in a piece of furniture simply by looking at the wood grain.
Similarly, a "walnut-colored" finish is merely a description of color and does not mean the item is made of actual walnut wood.
When evaluating furniture, check the materials used for specific components—such as tabletops, cabinet doors, frames, and back panels—individually.
By considering the materials, structure, and craftsmanship together, you can make an informed choice and select the furniture that best suits your needs.
