Solution | Timber Cutting / Wood Grain Patterns

Cutting methods aredefined by the angle between the saw cut and the annual growth rings:
1. Plain-sawn: An angle of 0–30° relative to the annual rings (nearly parallel). This produces a "cathedral" or arched grain pattern.
2. Rift-sawn: An angle of 30–60° relative to the annual rings. This produces a straight grain pattern.
3. Quarter-sawn: The log is first quartered; the cuts are made at an angle of 60–90° relative to the annual rings (nearly perpendicular). This also produces a straight grain pattern.
(Note: There is some inconsistency in Chinese terminology regarding "quarter-sawn" and "rift-sawn." For the purpose of this classification, they are distinguished here as "radial-oblique cut" [径断切] and "radial-perpendicular cut" [径截切]—both of which require the log to be quartered first.)
