There is a vast array of wood species available; when making a purchase, be sure to ask plenty of questions and inspect the options carefully!
Wood furniture generally falls into two categories:
One is *pure solid wood*, and the other is a *combination of solid wood and engineered panels*.
1⃣️ High-End Woods
**Black Walnut:** Primarily sourced from Eastern North America. Its color ranges from light tan to deep brown, featuring distinctive chocolate-colored grain patterns. Highly stable, it is the premier choice for high-end furniture; the FAS grade represents the highest quality standard.
**Teak:** Exemplified by Burmese Teak, this wood is harvested in Myanmar and Thailand. It is highly resistant to corrosion and insects, making it a common material for yacht decking, outdoor furniture, and similar applications; Burmese Teak is considered to be of the finest quality.
2⃣️ Mid-to-High-End Woods
**Cherry Wood:** Also known as "Red Walnut," this wood is primarily sourced from North America, Europe, and Japan. It features a pale brownish-pink hue, a fine grain, and a stable structure. Once processed into furniture, it is resistant to insect infestation; however, it is prone to oxidation and color changes over time, requiring regular maintenance.
**Ash Wood:** Primarily sourced from North America, Europe, and Northeast China. It features a distinct grain pattern and excellent elasticity, making it suitable for flooring, sports equipment, and similar items; North American Ash is known for its superior hardness.
**Beech Wood:** European Beech is native to Europe, though it is also found in Southern China. It features a pale yellow color and moderate hardness, making it suitable for furniture manufacturing, wood carving, and other woodworking projects; European Beech is renowned for its superior stability.
Common Woods
**Pine:** Varieties such as Nordic Pine and Russian Pine are sourced from Russia, Northern Europe, and Northeast China. It is lightweight, soft, and easy to process, offering excellent value for money. Commonly used in construction materials and entry-level furniture, it is priced between 2,000 and 5,000 RMB per cubic meter; however, it is prone to cracking and requires moisture-proofing treatment.
**Fir/Cedar:** Varieties such as Fragrant Fir and Spruce are sourced from Southern China and North America. It possesses a pleasant, aromatic scent but offers only moderate resistance to decay. It is frequently used for the structural framing of traditional buildings and is priced between 1,500 and 3,000 RMB per cubic meter. Rubberwood: Primarily sourced from Southeast Asia, it features a light color and high hardness. However, it is predominantly processed into finger-jointed panels, lacking the aesthetic appeal of natural wood grain. Priced between 1,500 and 4,000 RMB per cubic meter, it requires degreasing treatment to prevent insect infestation.
Specialty Timbers
Ebony (e.g., *Yinchenmu*): Found in the riverbeds of Sichuan (China) and Southeast Asia. Formed through natural carbonization, it is as hard as stone. It is used to create artworks and decorative pieces believed to ward off evil spirits; sold by the piece, prices start in the tens of thousands of RMB. It is not derived from modern tree species but is rather a product of natural carbonization.
Ironwood (*Tielimu*): Also known as Iron Pearwood, it is native to Yunnan (China) and Myanmar. Possessing extremely high density and exceptional resistance to decay, it is utilized in shipbuilding and heavy structural construction. Priced between 50,000 and 100,000 RMB per cubic meter, it is classified as a Class II Protected Plant in China.
Wenge (*Jichimu*): Also known as *Qizimu*, it is sourced from Africa and Southeast Asia. Its distinctive grain pattern resembles a chicken's wing, making it a popular choice for decorative components in furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Priced between 30,000 and 80,000 RMB per cubic meter, it requires specific treatment to prevent cracking.
