Tree Bark Appreciation [10] | A Collection of 72 Types of Tree Bark - Part 1
Sharing the functions of tree bark
Tree bark is the outermost protective structure of a tree, playing a crucial role in its life cycle:
✦ Protective function: As the tree's first line of defense, bark protects the tree's internal tissues from external environmental factors such as extreme weather and pests.
✦ Water and nutrient transport: While the xylem is primarily responsible for transporting water and minerals from the roots to the crown, the phloem in the bark transports sugars and other nutrients produced by photosynthesis down to the roots.
✦ Respiration: Tiny pores or cracks in the bark allow for gas exchange, helping the tree respire, ensuring oxygen intake and carbon dioxide release.
✦ Wound healing and regeneration: When a tree is injured, the bark helps heal the wound and promotes the growth of new tissue.
✦ Ecological value: It provides habitat for many organisms; insects, birds, and other small animals may rely on the bark for food and nesting.
🌿 Reasons why I photograph and document tree bark
✦ As a plant designer, photographing and documenting tree bark allows me to better understand plant characteristics. In winter, when leaves have fallen and the trees are too tall to identify leaves, fruits, flowers, etc., the trunk becomes key to identifying the plant, helping me identify plants faster in the early stages of projects, thus ensuring the rationality of subsequent designs.
✦ I also document plant leaves and trunks because the unique colors, textures, and patterns of the bark are so beautiful. Documenting them not only preserves these beautiful things but also provides inspiration for future artistic creations.
✦ Finally, it's to fulfill my small dream of becoming a botanist, like Li Shizhen, gaining a deeper understanding of plant pharmacology, compiling plant-related books, and becoming a useful member of society. #Xiaohongshu Nature Photography Initiative #Plant Identification #The Texture of Trees is Another Aspect of the Earth #Trees #Tree Trunks #Tree Bark #Nature Science #Nature Education

🍃 Sharing some plant identification tips:
Download the "Xingse" app on your mobile phone, take pictures of leaves, flowers, fruits, etc., for identification. Xingse will provide the species, find the closest match, and finally confirm it again with plant pictures in the China Plant Database.
